At our Monday meeting (yes I realize it is Thursday… been busy 😉 ), David Hill presented on the Cor Van Raay Southern Alberta Agribusiness Program. He is heading this program up at both the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College. Cor Van Raay’s investment in our community will pay huge dividends!
As David pointed out;
- World population is growing rapidly – estimated to be 10 billion people by 2050.
- Only five countries worldwide have any real capacity to produce food in excess of their nation’s needs. Canada being one of those five.
- Canada and China import about the same amount of food products from the US. Our imports are 80% processed / finished food products. China’s imports are 80% raw (unprocessed food products). What is wrong with that picture? Can you say “value-add”?
