If heaven ain’t a lot like Southern Alberta, I don’t wanna go.

Country music fans will say ” Allan you stole that lyric from Bocephus!” Guilty as charged.  But unless Hank Williams Jr calls me on it, the title stays.

Southern Alberta is a fantastic place to tour around…. but even better on a motorcycle!  The wonderfulness of the view, the smells, the air and the feeling of the road are all magnified when you are on your motorcycle.  This morning I wanted to visit clients in Magrath, Pincher Creek and Coleman.

I busted out the Yamaha FJR (see picture) and first went to Magrath.  When I left Magrath I didn’t go north back to highway…. that would be no fun, I went south to Spring Coulee and headed west on 505.  That is a beautiful road past the St Mary reservoir and the Waterton reservoir and intersected with highway 6.  South takes you to Waterton and North takes you to Pincher Creek.  Of course I didn’t go directly to Pincher…. I headed south to Twin Butte.  Twin Butte has an awesome Mexican Restaurant – celebrating their 20th anniversary.  So a great enchilada for lunch and a wild berry crumble ( a huge serving) and then I headed on to Pincher.

I helped out the four clients I planned to see in Pincher and then left Pincher of 507 west to Beaver Mines.  Had a brief stop to visit with my friend Jeff McLarty who runs the Beaver Mines store, and then north on 507 to highway 3.  West on highway 3 to visit two clients in Coleman and then I started back east on highway 3 to Lethbridge.

Did I stay on highway 3 the entire trip back? Of course not!  At the east end of Cowley there is a road that heads north, #510, that crosses the river and circles around the Oldman River Dam. My friend Sean told me that is a nice piece of road – and it certainly was. Fields of gold, green and blue and green fields dotted with hundreds of hay bales with that incredible blue Alberta sky going on forever – love it!  That road returns to highway 3 just east of Pincher.

The rest of the ride home was on highway #3… but I did spot a sign on the 510 for the Three Rivers fossil museum – a stop for next time 🙂

There are lots of great roads to explore in Southern Alberta.  Share some of your best roads with me.
